Coffee Culture in Baja ….. My long over due visit to La Stazione Café

It had been quite a while since I’d been wanting to check the coffee culture in Baja, México.

Due to my admiration of coffee culture, I’m always interested in what’s happening around the world related to coffee. I love reading about coffee, as much as I love to photograph coffee.  I’ve been following the Tweets of a coffee shop in Tijuana, México, whose twitter is run by the shop’s owner, Alex. I always read how passionate he is about coffee, how much he cares for it, and how much he loves his coffee shop. Also he always answers my many questions about his coffee bar, type of drinks, origin of his coffee, etc. I always knew that one day I had to plan a trip and try this shop. Tijuana is situated on the Pacific Coast at the United States–Mexico border.  Well, I finally had the opportunity this past weekend, when I visited this shop and two more. I might share about the other two shops later, but I will focus this post on my personal favorite this time La Stazione Café…

La Stazione is a very nice shop, well designed, comfortable and welcoming. They have a very nice and complete menu that includes coffee, teas, pastries, and a couple of food items. I was happy to read ‘cortado’ on their menu, something that I rarely see, which was first introduced to us by our favorite barista at one of our favorite coffee shops in Los Angeles, Cognoscenti Coffee. We started with a cortado and a cappuccino, and they were perfectly prepared, awesome coffee flavor, smooth, coffee perfection. We took the time to enjoy and finish our coffees… then

… we noticed this menu on their wall, Remedios para el Calor, (Hot Weather Remedies) and since it was a very hot day, and they sounded really good, we started with a Limonada de Té Verde, prepared with fresh lemons, and freshly brewed green tea. It was incredibly refreshing and delicious. Oliver was preparing these iced tea drinks, and he told me how important it is for them to use all natural and quality ingredients. Then he recommended Solsticio de Toronja, so we decided to try it too. Prepared with freshly brewed Oolong tea, and fresh grapefruit, wow!! La Stazione really took the iced tea to a higher level. I rarely order anything other than hot coffee drinks at a coffee shop, but I am glad I did try La Stazione’s Iced Tea Drinks, so well prepared, the best ingredients, absolutely amazing.  One huge problem with that, my expectations for iced tea are very high now. This is the way I want my iced tea all the time, anywhere.

I’m happy about this visit, I found a genuine café, with trained baristas who actually care about the quality of coffee and everything that they are serving. Coffee is a highlight on their menu, this is a café that takes its coffee seriously. If you live in, close to, or visit this border city, I highly recommend La Stazione Café, full espresso bar, excellent coffee, absolutely amazing iced drinks, very good pastries, and very nice people. I’m already planning to go back. There are a couple more shops recommended to me by my sister in law, I will visit those when I’m back in the city within the next month or so, but I will not miss a visit to La Stazione once again.
